Scraping your own popcorn ceiling in Austin is one of the more achievable do-it-yourself jobs, and the part that beats people is not the scraping. Wetting and scraping unpainted texture is slow, unpleasant and genuinely easy. What follows is drywall finishing: taping, three coats feathered wide, sanding a whole ceiling plane flat, and getting it smooth enough that flat paint does not show every joint. That is a skilled trade, it takes practice, and it is where most Austin popcorn ceiling projects stall.

What the DIY route actually costs

Tools and materials for one room come to somewhere around $150 to $300 if you are buying rather than borrowing: a pump sprayer, a couple of wide knives, a scraper with a bag attachment, plastic sheeting, tape, a pole sander, compound and primer. Add a sander hire if the ceiling turns out to be painted.

Against that, a 200 square foot bedroom done professionally runs roughly $460 to $810 in Austin. So the saving on one room is real but not enormous, and it disappears entirely if you have to hire somebody to fix a finish you were not happy with.

Test first, and stop if it is painted

Wet a patch, wait ten minutes, push at it. If it comes away soft you are in business. If it does not, put the sprayer down.

Painted texture needs a shrouded planetary sander running on HEPA extraction, or a steamer and a great deal of patience. Sanding a ceiling by hand with a pole sander and a dust mask is how people end up with a house full of fine gypsum dust and a ceiling that still has texture on it. That version of this project is not worth the money it saves.

The finishing problem, stated plainly

Under the texture is a level 3 drywall finish. The joints are taped and coated once, the screws have one pass, and none of it was ever meant to be seen. To get to a flat ceiling you have to bring that up to level 5, which means skimming the entire plane, sanding it, and doing it without leaving ridges where one pass met the next.

Doing that on a wall is hard. Doing it overhead, on a plane you will then light from the side, is harder. If you are going to hire one part of this job, hire this part and scrape it yourself. Plenty of Austin customers do exactly that and we are happy to quote finishing on a ceiling somebody else stripped.

The one hard stop

Do not scrape a ceiling sprayed before 1986 without a lab result. Not because it is illegal in your own house, since the Texas rules exclude a private residence, but because dry scraping asbestos-bearing texture in your own living room is exactly the exposure route the whole regulatory apparatus exists to prevent.

A sample costs $250 to $850 professionally, or about $30 for a kit plus the lab fee. That is a small number against the alternative.

What we would tell a friend

One bedroom, unpainted texture, house built after 1990, and you have a free weekend? Have a go. Worst case you hire someone to finish it and you have saved the scraping labour.

Whole house, painted, or anything old enough to need a sample? Get quotes. Marisa has priced a lot of half-finished DIY ceilings and they are not cheaper than starting properly.

Is popcorn ceiling removal hard to do yourself?

The scraping is easy and the finishing is not. Wetting and scraping unpainted texture takes patience rather than skill, but bringing the drywall underneath from a level 3 builder finish to a flat, paint-ready level 5 surface is a skilled trade and it is where most attempts come unstuck.

Can I hire you just to finish a ceiling I scraped myself?

Yes, and we quote that regularly. Send photos of the bare ceiling and we will price the skim, prime and paint.

How long does a room take to do yourself?

Realistically two to four weekends for one room, most of it in the coating and sanding rather than the scraping.
