The failure that makes people hate their flat ceiling
A ceiling that looked perfect on the day it was painted, and then three weeks later, in the afternoon, the joints show up as faint bands running across the room. That is not bad workmanship in the ordinary sense. It is the difference in porosity and texture between the taped joints and the bare drywall paper either side of them, revealed by light travelling almost parallel to the surface.
Texture hides it. Paint does not. A level 5 skim does, because it puts one continuous material across the whole ceiling so there is nothing for the light to differentiate.
How we actually apply it
Thinned all purpose compound, applied with a wide skim blade in two passes at right angles to each other, then sanded with a shrouded sander on extraction, then primed. The primer is not optional and it is not just paint: it seals the compound so the finish coat absorbs evenly across joints and field.
Two passes at right angles is the part cheap jobs skip. One pass in one direction leaves directional ridges, and ridges under raking light are exactly the problem you paid to avoid.
When flat is the wrong answer
We turn down flat ceilings sometimes. An eighties house with visible joist deflection, a room with a long unsupported span, or a ceiling with a history of water movement will not stay flat looking, and no amount of skim fixes structure.
Hector calls it the string test. Hold a string tight across the ceiling and look at the gap. If the plane itself is out, texture is the honest recommendation and flat is selling you a disappointment.
